How it works

TEAM SELECTION

  • Squads will consist of 32 to 36 players.

  • Up to 4 players can be changed from day 1 to day 2 of the competition. Players may not be changed after they have played a game on any given day. For example a player cannot be brought in just for the singles on day 2. They will have the play in both the fours in the morning and singles in the afternoon.

  • Squads will be selected by the appointed Captains, they may wish to nominate several assistants.

  • Player Eligibility – To be eligible to play in the St Georges Cup you must meet one of the following criteria:

    • Live in England

    • Playing regular bowls

    • Final decision on eligibility is down to the Committee and made on a case by case basis.

  • Boundaries for selection:​

North: Cheshire, Cumbria, Derbyshire, Durham, Herefordshire, Humberside, Lancashire, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire, Merseyside, North Yorkshire, Northumberland, Nottinghamshire, Shropshire, South Yorkshire, Staffordshire, Warwickshire, West Midlands, West Yorkshire and Worcestershire.

 

South: Avon, Buckinghamshire, Cambridgeshire, Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, East Sussex, Essex, Gloucestershire, Hampshire, Hertfordshire, Isle Of Wight, Kent, London, Norfolk, Northamptonshire, Oxfordshire, Somerset, Suffolk, Surrey, West Sussex and Wiltshire.

 

Should any player wish to challenge what area they are deemed to eligible for then they can submit a written request for this to be reviewed by the St Georges Cup Committee.

 

FORMAT AND ESTIMATE TIMES
Day 1

  • Practice 9:00am to 9:45am

  • Opening Ceremony & Pictures 10.00am

  • Session 1 – 8 x Pairs 10.30am

  • Session 2 – 8 x Pairs 11.45am

  • Lunch 1.00pm

  • Session 3 – 8 x Fours 2.00pm

  • Close of play 4.30pm

 

Day 2

  • Session 1 – 8 x Fours 9.15am

  • Session 2 – 32 x Singles 11.30am

  • Presentation of trophy to winning captain/team 3.00pm

 

The schedule for the singles will be announced after play has finished on Day 1. Both captains will submit their order of play which will be announced by both captains.

 

The order of play for each session will be submitted by the captains to tournament director before each session so that the scorecards and schedule can be completed.

 

Players are requested to arrive at the venue no later than 9.45am on the Saturday and 9am on Sunday, with play following the estimated times above.

 

The committee will put the mats out. When putting equipment away 4 mats are to be rolled up by the North and 4 by the South. If we all muck in then it gets done a lot quicker.

MATCH RULES

  • Pairs:

    • First to score 21 shots, Unlimited ends.

    • A team may kill the jack 3 times without penalty, for the 4th and subsequent times 3 shots will be awarded to the opposition.

  • Fours:

    • Played over 15 ends.

    • A team may kill the jack 2 times without penalty, for the 3rd and subsequent times 3 shots will be awarded to the opposition.

  • Singles:

    • First to score 21 shots, Unlimited ends.

    • A team may kill the jack 3 times without penalty, for the 4th and subsequent times 3 shots will be awarded to the opposition.

 

SCORING
There are 64 matches to be played, one point awarded for each match win. In the fours should there be a draw then 0.5 points will be awarded to each team. There will also be an additional point available for the overall aggregate of fours 1-4 and 5-8, if the aggregate is level then 0.5 points will be awarded to each team. Therefore a total of 68 points are available to play for.

CLAIMING THE CUP

To win the St Georges Cup outright, a team must score 34.5 of the 68 points available. In the case of 34-34 tie, the winning team from the previous St Georges Cup retains the trophy.
